Giving back to our community: Winter Fundraisers

by india

Across all TCG campuses just ahead of the Christmas break, we will be collecting donations and raising money for two charities CashForKids and Cornerstones to help people in our community.

CashForKids

Cash for Kids is a grant-giving charity helping the children that need it most across the UK.

Their mission is to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in communities who are affected by poverty, illness, neglect, or have additional needs. They believe that all children should be able to express their individuality, achieve their potential and live life to the full.

CashForKids work with grass-roots organisations that aim to make a difference in young lives, directly supporting families who often have nowhere else to go.

On Monday 12th December, 11:30am-1:30pm in the main entrance, our students are hosting a chocolate tombola and sports activities to raise money for CashForKids.

Shoebox Collections for Cornerstones Homeless Charity

Cornerstone Day Centre is a Caritas project that helps people in Manchester have the support they need to prevent them from becoming homeless.

They help people who do become homeless get secure, safe accommodation with the support they need to make a new home so that no one has to sleep rough.

In parallel with delivering direct housing outcomes, they aim to enable people to improve their well-being through providing services that meet immediate basic needs, promote mental health and well-being, enable people to access health and other support services and take up education, training, volunteering opportunities and employment, as a means of sustaining positive housing outcomes.

Our supported internship and progression curriculum learners from Trafford College are collecting shoeboxes for Cornerstones to donate this winter.

Shoeboxes can contain items such as hats, scarves, gloves, sweets, chocolate, and toiletries. If you don’t have a shoebox you can still donate any useful items to the team.

Collection Point – please take any items to the reception area, and state they are for the Cornerstones collection hosted by Vicki Myers.

Deadline for collections is Friday 9th December.

To get involved or for more information please email: vicki.myers@tcg.ac.uk.

Making a Difference

Well done to Kate Mackelvie and her group who are making a difference by organising fundraising events.

Students have selected the charity of their choice and have produced posters and promo videos to encourage people to donate.

We spoke to student Elly Dixon about what the group have been up to in their fundraising:

The Year 13 Creative Media group have been set a brief to create a fundraiser for any charity of our choice. Teenagers and young people often have a negative reputation of never doing anything selfless or giving back to people. Doing this brief reflects positively on our generation and shows that we are willing to make a real change and do something kind for the community. It is also a great way to boost our CV’s and make future employers recognise the positive acts that we are capable of doing. This fundraiser also showcases our independence as this is an individual project. We have to find a charity, set up an event and post it to social media without relying on anyone else to help us do this. It also reflects brilliantly on Marple Sixth Form College.

Some of the events that the students have planned include selling products such as digital drawings, paper-mache animals and afternoon teas for care home residents, whilst others are hosting events in local pubs or doing individual activities such as a sponsored skydive. There are no limits to what we can do to raise money it’s just a case of showcasing our talents or stepping far out of our comfort zones! Anything to grab people’s attention and show them that it is worth donating money to.

So far, we have raised an estimate of £1500 as a collective. We have done this through marketing on social media using our photography skills and digital graphics. We have used software such as photoshop and illustrator to design these posters, and also created some other promotional material, such as fun videos, using premiere pro.

Please donate through QR codes on the posters. Every donation makes a difference!

In total 14 students have set up Just Giving pages, and have started to receive donations for their charities – The Christie Hospital and MINDSo far students have raised nearly £1500. A fantastic initiative!
