Course Overview

A level Chemistry is highly valued by universities and employers as it enables students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Chemistry is a practical subject, and the AQA specification provides lots of opportunities to enjoy hands on laboratory work across the range of chemical disciplines, enabling students to gain the Practical Skills Endorsement” at the end of the second year.

Course Requirements

PLEASE NOTE – YOU MUST APPLY FOR 3 A LEVELS

Standard A Level entry requirements: 5 x GCSE grade 5’s or above (must include Maths and English Language). However, certain subjects may have additional entry criteria, which can be found below:

Additional Entry Requirements:
A Level Chemistry will require grade 6 in GCSE Maths
A Level Chemistry will require grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry or 66 in Combined Science.

This subject must also be studied alongside at least one other science-based (Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) course.

Teaching staff are qualified chemists, dedicated to helping all students achieve their potential and their career goals.Rigorous and accurate assessment methods are used to monitor progress and set challenging targets. We aim to nurture a passion for the subject and lay the foundation for future study.Students have a chance to participate in the Chemistry Olympiad and the RSC Young Analyst Competition. A Level Chemistry is essential for many scientific careers. There are opportunities for day visits to a range of events and employers.”

Assessment

100% Exam-based assessment via three papers at the end of the second year.

Progression

An A level in chemistry offers progression to many science-based university courses, including Chemistry, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Forensic Science, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, and Veterinary Science, as well as many other non-science related degrees. There are also many apprenticeships for which chemistry A level would be an asset.
