Course Overview

Further Maths is an additional A-Level which you can choose to take as well as A-Level Maths. It covers mathematical concepts and tools which are not included in A-Level Maths, but are used widely in Physics & Engineering courses at university, and introduced quickly at the start of a Mathematics degree, such as matrices and complex numbers.

It introduces topics which form the basis of the study of pure mathematics at university. It provides far more depth to your study of mechanics and introduces you to Discrete Maths.

Course Requirements

Can only be taken as a 4th A Level and students must have a grade 8/9 profile.

What you will Learn

If you want to study for a Maths degree at University then Further Maths is invaluable, as you will otherwise lack familiarity with certain core concepts when you begin your degree.Studying Further Maths A-Level begins your journey as a rounded Mathematician who enjoys the challenge represented by advanced mathematics. You should also strongly consider Further Maths if you want to study Physics or Engineering at a Russell Group University.How will I learn? Lessons are usually teacher led and could involve investigation, discussion, group work and working on examples. You will use textbooks and supplementary worksheets to support your learning.

Assessment

Pure Maths makes up two thirds of the A-level and Applied Maths makes up one third (one sixth on Mechanics and one sixth on Discrete).The final exams consist of three two-hour papers.
Paper 1: 100% Pure
Paper 2: 100% Pure
Paper 3 50% Mechanics, 50% Discrete

Progression

You could progress to a related higher education course such as maths, business, accountancy, science, computing, engineering or economics. There are lots of careers open to you such as aeronautical engineer, biochemist, veterinarian or chemical engineer.
